Nitrous System

There is some debate over whether nitrous oxide systems should be considered forced induction, but many experts and racing organizations do classify it as a form of forced induction. While nitrous oxide systems work differently from turbochargers and superchargers, they share the key characteristic of forcing additional oxygen into the engine to increase power output.

  • Nitrous oxide systems inject an oxygen-rich compound directly into the engine's intake, allowing more fuel to be burned.
  • Unlike turbochargers and superchargers, nitrous systems don't create positive pressure in the intake manifold.
  • Many racing organizations, including NHRA, classify nitrous oxide systems as forced induction for competition purposes.
  • Nitrous systems offer instant power gains, similar to other forced induction methods, but the boost is temporary and limited by bottle capacity.
